Since the addition of Majors2-4 introduces new complexity to the counting of students, talking through various scenarios and documenting them seemed a useful thing to do.

Some of this discussion may be as easy as some wording changes.  Colleges or departments might report 2345 primary majors plus an additional 232 secondary through quaternary majors.  “Number of majors” replaces “number of enrolled students” to avoid math inconsistencies when compared to enrollment numbers.

However, other questions beckon. For example, how do you count IP students both during the year and at time of graduation?  How do you count students with the same major1 and major2 who have different major options?  What reports are we currently doing?

Interested?  We are looking for a few volunteers to help the rest of the community get a handle on this as reporting options for majors 2-4 are expanded. Interested parties should contact either Michelle Stine (mlp3@psu.edu) or Alex Yin (acy1@psu.edu).
